The delta with young children

What changes when you bring a baby, a toddler or a primary-school child to the delta: the 2026 car-seat rule, the heat, life jackets that fit, where the toilets are, and how to plan a day around a nap.

The short version

  • Choose a one-day trip with the shortest drive, or a two-day trip that splits it. The Ben Tre and garden kitchen days have about two hours on the road each way.
  • Tell us every child's age and height. Since 1 January 2026, children under 10 or shorter than 1.35 m may not sit in the driver's row and must use a suitable safety device.
  • Plan the walking for the morning and the rest for midday. In Can Tho the mean daily maximum is about 30 °C in December and close to 34 °C in April.
  • Use mosquito repellent all year, and take it seriously from June to October, when dengue peaks in Vietnam.
  • Treat every boat as optional. A life jacket that fits is a condition, not a nice-to-have.

Car seats and the 2026 rule

Vietnam's 2024 law on road traffic order and safety took effect for this rule on 1 January 2026. Its Article 10(3) says that a child under 10 years old, or shorter than 1.35 m, may not sit in the same row as the driver (except in vehicles with only one row) and must use a safety device suited to the child. The articles we checked do not spell out how the rule applies to every kind of hired vehicle, and in practice not every car company in the south keeps seats for every age.

Our approach is simple. We ask for each child's age and height, request the right seat for your date, and write in the confirmation which seats were secured. If a seat cannot be secured, you hear it before you pay, and you can bring your own; some travel seats can be fitted with a standard rear seat belt. We do not seat children in the front row.

How long a child can sit in a car

The honest answer is: less than adults think. That is why our ease tables start with the time in a vehicle. From central Ho Chi Minh City it is about 71 km to My Tho, 85 km to Ben Tre town, 108 km to Cai Be and 171 km to Can Tho. With traffic, that means one and a half to three and a half hours per leg.

TripLongest single driveOur suggestion for under-fives
Market and garden kitchen dayAbout 2 hoursGood choice; plan the drive home for the afternoon nap
Ben Tre orchards and coconut dayAbout 2 hoursGood choice; the boat can be skipped
Cai Be and An Binh, 2 daysAbout 2.5–3 hoursFine with a hotel night; ask for a family room
Can Tho in 2 daysAbout 3–3.5 hoursConsider adding a night to split the drive

We stop once on every long leg for toilets and a stretch, and more often if a child needs it. Bring the snacks and the one toy that works; the driver has water and wet wipes.

Boats and life jackets

Vietnamese rules for passenger boats crossing rivers require a life jacket or buoyancy aid for everyone on board, handed out before departure and worn from the pier until the boat docks. Can Tho's transport department also requires passengers at tourist piers to wear life jackets. The rules do not guarantee that every small boat carries a size that fits a three-year-old.

So we ask the boat operator in advance for child sizes. If a fitting jacket cannot be confirmed, that boat leg comes out of the plan for that child, and we say so before you travel. On every one of our trips, the boat can be dropped and the day still works.

Small sampans are low and rock as you step in. An adult steps in first and takes the child from the person on the landing; the rower holds the boat against the bank. There is no toilet on board, so go before you board.

Heat, sun and mosquitoes

The delta is hot all year. In Can Tho the mean daily maximum runs from about 30 °C in December to close to 34 °C in April, and humidity sits around 78–87%. Hats, light long sleeves, a water bottle each, and shade at midday are the basics; our trips put the walking before 11:00 and the rest after lunch.

Dengue is spread by mosquitoes, peaks in Vietnam from June to October, and almost all cases are in the central and southern regions. There is no specific treatment. Repellent suitable for your children's ages, applied morning and late afternoon, is the main protection; ask your doctor or travel clinic before you leave.

Toilets, nappies and food

Toilets are where we plan them: an expressway stop, the workshop or market, the orchard and the lunch house. Some rural toilets are basic, so carry tissues and hand gel. There are no toilets on small boats. For babies, the lunch house usually has a quiet corner and a hammock; changing tables are rare, so bring a mat.

Delta food suits most children. Rice, noodle soup and grilled fish are on most tables, and fruit is everywhere: rambutan, mango, longan and others, depending on the month. Tell us about allergies in the form; on the cooking day the menu is built around them.

Strollers or carriers

A carrier is easier than a stroller on every one of our trips. Garden lanes are narrow and often unpaved, landings have steps, and old houses have raised thresholds. If you bring a stroller for the city, leave it in the car for the delta day.

Which trip for which age

  • Babies: the Ben Tre day by road only, or the garden kitchen day with a long nap in a hammock.
  • Toddlers, 1–4: the same two days; skip the market if crowds unsettle them.
  • Children 5–10: any of the four. The cooking day and the coconut-candy workshop hold attention longest.
  • Older children: the Can Tho trip, with the early market boat if they are morning people.

Places are described on the destination pages; the when to go page covers the months.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Do hired cars in Vietnam have child seats?

Not always. Since 1 January 2026 children under 10 or below 1.35 m must use a suitable safety device and may not sit in the driver's row. We request seats for your date and confirm in writing which were secured; if one is not available, you can bring your own.

Is the Mekong Delta safe for toddlers?

With sensible planning, yes. The main risks are heat, mosquitoes, water and long drives. Our trips keep the drives short, the boats optional, and the middle of the day in the shade.

What age is the floating market suitable for?

Any age, if the child can manage an early start or you choose the later boat. Children must wear a fitting life jacket; small boats have no toilet.

Should we bring a stroller?

We suggest a carrier instead. Garden lanes, boat landings and old-house thresholds are hard going for strollers.
