Wide brown river with low green islets and small boats in the Mekong Delta

Three places, seen slowly

Our trips stay in a small part of the delta on purpose: the coconut country around Ben Tre, the garden houses of Cai Be with An Binh islet, and Can Tho on the Hau River. These pages describe each one for a slow visit, including when to leave it out.

Why only three

The delta is large. Our three places are all within about three and a half hours of Ho Chi Minh City by road, which is the most we ask anyone to sit in a car on a single leg. Chau Doc, Tra Su forest, Ca Mau and Ha Tien are further out and need longer trips than ours; we do not go there.

A note on names. In 2025 Vietnam merged many provinces. Ben Tre is now part of Vinh Long province; Cai Be and My Tho are in the new Dong Thap province; Can Tho city now includes the former Soc Trang and Hau Giang provinces. The travel names are unchanged, and we use them.

What the three have in common

All three are places where the land is mostly orchard and garden, cut by canals, and where the main rivers are wide and brown. They are also visited by many day trips from Ho Chi Minh City, so none of them is undiscovered. What changes the experience is the time of day and how long you stay in one spot.

Heat is the constant. In Can Tho the mean daily maximum is around 30 °C in December and close to 34 °C in April; humidity stays high all year. Our trips put walking in the morning and rest at midday for that reason. The when to go page sets out the months.

Moving between the three

The three places sit along one road corridor. From Ho Chi Minh City the expressway runs south to Trung Luong, where the turn for My Tho and the Rach Mieu bridges leads to Ben Tre; the main line continues west past Cai Be to the My Thuan bridges, Vinh Long and then Can Tho. That is why Cai Be and Can Tho combine well in a three-day trip, and why Ben Tre is usually a separate day: it sits on a spur, not on the way.

Times are ranges for a car with normal traffic; leaving Ho Chi Minh City on a weekday morning or returning on a Sunday afternoon can add half an hour or more.

A word on floating markets

Many visitors choose a delta destination for its floating market, so it is worth being clear. Of the markets near our three places, Cai Rang in Can Tho is the one still trading on the water every morning, much smaller than at its peak and with a growing share of tourist boats. Cai Be's market has weakened sharply. Ben Tre has none on our route. If the market is the heart of your trip, choose Can Tho and take the early boat; if it is one wish among several, any of the three will give you the river, the orchards and the food.

How we describe each place

Each destination page follows the same order: what the place really is, including the parts that are busy or staged; how many nights it deserves at a gentle pace; the months that suit it; how to get there and how long that takes; published costs on the ground, with their dates; and when to leave it out. Figures that come from a source carry the source and the date we checked it. Where we could not find a figure we trust, such as an entrance fee that is not published, we say so instead of guessing.

Choosing between them

  • One free day: Ben Tre, the closest coconut country, now reached by road all the way.
  • Older parents: Cai Be and An Binh, with a hotel night that splits the driving.
  • The river and its market: Can Tho, the longest drive and the biggest town.
  • Young children: Ben Tre first; read travelling with young children before choosing Can Tho.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Why don't you go to Chau Doc or Tra Su?

They are four and a half hours or more from Ho Chi Minh City by road, which does not fit trips of one to three days at our pace.

Is Ben Tre still a province?

Not since the 2025 merger; it is now part of Vinh Long province. Ben Tre remains the name of the town and the name everyone uses for the area.

Which place is quietest?

None is empty. An Binh islet on a weekday morning outside the holidays is usually the calmest of the three.

Which is easiest with a wheelchair?

None of the three is fully step-free. Tell us your needs and we will describe each stop honestly, including where we do not know.
