Wooden boats loaded with fruit and vegetables on the Hau River at Cai Rang in the early morning

Tours · Can Tho · 2 days

Can Tho in two days, at an easy pace

The city on the Hau River in two unhurried days: a long rest after the drive, the Binh Thuy ancient house in the late afternoon, an evening on the Ninh Kieu riverfront, and a morning on the water. The floating market comes in two versions, early or late, and we tell you plainly what each one shows.

Who this trip is for

Can Tho is the trip for travellers who want the delta's main river city, and are prepared to spend the most time in the car of any of our four trips to get there. It suits couples and families with children who travel well by road, and older travellers who would rather do one long drive with a rest at each end than several short transfers.

The famous image of Can Tho is the floating market at Cai Rang. It is still there, and its culture was recognised as national intangible heritage in 2016, but it is much smaller than it was. Roads and bridges let traders move goods by truck, and a growing share of the boats you see are carrying visitors. Go with that expectation and the morning is still worth it: wholesale boats of fruit, a noodle breakfast on the water and the river at its coolest hour. Go expecting hundreds of trading boats and you will be disappointed.

How to read this table

Lines that say road routing, or name a publisher, come from a published source, listed under the table with the date we checked it. Lines that say our plan describe how we design the day: they are promises about the plan, not measurements. The step height at a wharf, for example, changes with the tide, so we do not print a number for it. Your written quote repeats the table for your dates.

The wharf matters. Can Tho's transport department requires life jackets for passengers at tourist piers, and reduces or suspends boat operations in storms and floods. In October and November the highest tides can flood the riverside streets for a few hours; we plan the boat time around them.

Day by day

Day 1

Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho, rest, Binh Thuy and the riverfront

Binh Thuy's carved rooms in the late-afternoon light

08:00 pick-up. The drive is about 171 km on the expressway chain that now runs from Ho Chi Minh City through Trung Luong and My Thuan to Can Tho; with traffic it takes three to three and a half hours. We stop once for toilets and a coffee. You arrive in time for lunch near the river.

After lunch, the hotel and about two hours of rest. Rooms are not always ready at midday; when an early check-in matters, for a nap or for a parent who needs to lie down, we request it and, if needed, quote for it so the room is yours on arrival.

About 15:30 the car takes you 8 km to the Binh Thuy ancient house, built in 1870 by the Duong family and used as a film set for The Lover. Its published hours (2023) reopen it in the afternoon from 14:00; check locally. Late afternoon is cooler. Then back to the Ninh Kieu riverfront, where the night market starts after about 16:00 and the pedestrian bridge is lit after dark. Dinner is your choice; your guide suggests places.

Day 2

The Hau River in the morning, then home

The river at the coolest hour, whichever version you choose

Early version: you leave the hotel at 05:30 with a packed snack, board a covered boat at the city wharf and ride 30 to 40 minutes to Cai Rang, which is busiest from about 06:00 to 07:30. Breakfast is a bowl of noodle soup bought from a boat. You are back at the hotel around 08:30, in time to sleep again before checkout.

Later version: breakfast first, board at 07:30 and reach Cai Rang around 08:00, when trade is thinning and the boats you see are more likely to be visitors. The river is still pleasant and you see the wholesale landing on the bank; you do not see the market at its fullest. Third option: skip the market and visit Con Son islet, about 7 km from the centre, where families run an agricultural-tourism cooperative. The islet crossing adds two boardings.

Lunch, a rest of about 90 minutes, checkout, and the drive back to Ho Chi Minh City at about 13:30, arriving in the late afternoon.

Who this trip is NOT for

  • Anyone whose main worry is time in the car. At about three hours each way, this is the longest drive of our trips; the Ben Tre day has roughly two-thirds of the road time.
  • Travellers expecting a crowded traditional market. Cai Rang is much reduced and partly touristic; we will not pretend otherwise.
  • Families with babies who sleep badly in cars, unless you add a second night and split the drive at Vinh Long.
  • People who need to be back in Ho Chi Minh City before about 17:00 on day 2.
  • Travellers wanting an overnight boat. We sleep in a hotel; overnight cruises are a separate kind of trip.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Is the early market boat worth it with children?

If your children wake early anyway, often yes: the river is cool, the boats are busiest and the noodle breakfast is a treat. If an early start would ruin the rest of the day, take the later boat and accept a quieter market.

Can we fly to Can Tho instead of driving?

Can Tho's airport, about 9 km from the centre, listed only domestic routes when we checked, and routes change. From Ho Chi Minh City the road is the practical way. If you arrive from elsewhere in Vietnam, we can start the trip at the airport.

Are the boats safe for older travellers?

We use a covered boat with seats and life jackets, board once and stay aboard. The wharf step is the hardest part; your guide and the boat crew hold an arm on the way down and up.

Can we add a second night?

Yes. A second night in Can Tho lets day 2 be the market and a long rest, with the drive on day 3; or a night in Vinh Long on the way out splits the road time in half.
