When to go: heat, rain and fruit
The delta has no bad month for a short trip, but each month asks something different of you. This page sets out the heat, the rain, the fruit and the flood tides month by month, for travellers who care more about comfort than about a photograph.
The year at a glance
3 = easiest, 1 = hardest for that line. Comfort from Can Tho climate data; fruit from published orchard seasons; mosquito line from WHO's dengue peak, June to October.
In short: December to February is the most comfortable; May to August is fruit season, hot and showery; September is the wettest month; October and November bring the flood-season tides; April is the hottest month of the year.

Month by month
| Months | Mean daily max (Can Tho) | Rain | What it means for a gentle trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| December–January | About 30 °C | Very little | The easiest weather of the year. Busy around the Lunar New Year. |
| February | About 31 °C | Almost none | Still comfortable; Tet often falls in late January or February, with crowds; book early. |
| March | About 33 °C | Little | Hotter afternoons; salinity in the river mouths peaks in the dry season. |
| April | About 34 °C | Starting | The hottest month. Keep days short and rest long. |
| May | About 33 °C | Rains begin | Fruit season starts; first heavy showers. |
| June–August | About 31–32 °C | Frequent showers | Orchards at their fullest; an afternoon shower most days; mosquitoes. |
| September | About 31 °C | Wettest month | Plan with slack; mosquitoes at their peak. |
| October–November | About 31 °C | Heavy in October, easing in November | High water and peak tides can flood riverside streets for a few hours. |
Temperatures are the long-term mean daily maximums for Can Tho; Ben Tre and Cai Be are similar. Rain usually arrives as heavy afternoon showers rather than all-day downpours, but September can be wet for days at a time.

Heat
The delta never gets cold. The coolest month in Can Tho still has a mean daily maximum of about 30 °C, and April reaches close to 34 °C, with a record of 40 °C. Humidity is around 78–81% in the dry months and 84–87% in the rainy ones. For children and older travellers, heat is the factor that most often decides how a day goes. Our answer is the same in every month: walk in the morning, rest at midday, and keep the car air-conditioned.

Rain
The rainy season runs from May to November. In Can Tho, February averages under 4 mm of rain and September about 450 mm. From June to October Can Tho records rain on about 20 days a month, often as a heavy shower rather than steady rain. We carry umbrellas and ponchos, move the outdoor parts around the shower, and drop a boat leg if the rower or the authorities advise it.

Fruit
The national tourism authority puts the orchard peak from May to August. In Cho Lach, the orchard district of the former Ben Tre province, rambutan, durian and longan are harvested then. On An Binh, the gardens are fullest around July and August, though some have fruit all year. If eating fruit off the tree is the reason for the trip, choose these months and accept the heat and the showers.

Flood season and tides
From late summer the Mekong rises, and from September to November the delta is at high water. In the lower delta, where our trips go, this is felt mostly as tides: in 2025 Can Tho's peaks were forecast for 10–12 October and 8–9 November, residents were asked to limit travel at high tide (05:00–08:00 and 16:00–19:00), and riverside streets in Can Tho and Vinh Long were expected to flood around the highest tides. We plan boat time and riverside walks around the tide tables for your dates.

Mosquitoes and dengue
WHO reports that dengue in Vietnam peaks from June to October each year, with almost all cases in the central and southern regions. Repellent matters all year in the delta and most in those months, especially at dawn and dusk. Ask your doctor or travel clinic before you leave, particularly for young children.

Holidays and crowds
Weather is only half of timing. The weeks around the Lunar New Year (Tet), usually in late January or February, are a busy time in the delta: the flower nurseries at Cai Mon and around the region have their busiest weeks, families travel home, hotels fill early, and some family businesses may close over the holiday; check before you go. Vietnamese public holidays and weekends also bring day visitors from Ho Chi Minh City to the gardens near My Tho and Ben Tre. A weekday outside the holidays is the calmest choice in any month.

Our suggestion by party
- Young children: December to March; or June to August for fruit, with short days and long rests.
- Older parents: December to February, when the heat is lowest.
- Couples who love fruit: late May to August.
- Anyone who dislikes crowds: avoid the weeks around Tet and Vietnamese public holidays.
Trips: all four. Places: Ben Tre, Cai Be and An Binh, Can Tho.
Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
What is the most comfortable month for the Mekong Delta?
December to February: the lowest temperatures of the year, around 30 °C in the afternoon, and very little rain.
When is fruit season?
Roughly May to August, with rambutan, durian and longan in the orchards. Some gardens have fruit all year.
Is the rainy season a bad time to go?
Not for a short trip. Most rain falls as afternoon showers. September is the wettest month and needs the most flexibility.
Should we avoid the flood season?
Not necessarily. In the lower delta it mostly means high tides that can flood riverside streets for a few hours. We plan around the tide times.
