Who these two days are for
We built this trip for families travelling with parents in their seventies and eighties, and for couples who want two quiet days rather than one busy one. Its subject is the delta's garden-house culture: timber houses built by landowning families in the nineteenth century, set back from the river among fruit trees, and the orchards of An Binh islet across the water from Vinh Long.
The night is in a hotel, not a homestay. Many families on An Binh host guests in their homes, and for some travellers that is the point of coming. Ours usually want a room with its own bathroom, air-conditioning and, for some parents, a lift or a ground-floor room, so we book a hotel in Vinh Long town and spend the evening on the riverside rather than on the islet.
A note on geography after the 2025 merger: Cai Be is now part of Dong Thap province, and Vinh Long province now also takes in the former Ben Tre and Tra Vinh. Nothing on the ground has moved; only the names on the province signs.

The ease table
| Ease measure | This trip | Where the figure comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Time in a vehicle, whole trip | About 5.5–7 hours over two days | Road routing: 108 km out, about 35 km Cai Be–Vinh Long, 136 km back |
| Longest single drive | About 2.5–3 hours, the return on day 2 | Road routing, range |
| Boat boardings | Two: the crossing to An Binh and back on day 2 | Our plan |
| Steps and monkey bridges | Raised thresholds and a few porch steps at the old houses; the monkey bridge at one orchard is optional | Our plan; Mia.vn on the orchard |
| Walking | Day 1 under 1 km; day 2 about 1.5 km on garden lanes, in short stretches | Our plan |
| Shade and toilets | Expressway stop; toilets at the houses, the lunch stops, the hotel and the orchard | Our plan |
| Midday rest | About 90 minutes each day | Our plan |
| Earliest start | 08:00 on day 1; 08:30 on day 2 | Our plan |
Lines that say road routing, or name a publisher, come from a published source, listed under the table with the date we checked it. Lines that say our plan describe how we design the day: they are promises about the plan, not measurements. The step height at a wharf, for example, changes with the tide, so we do not print a number for it. Your written quote repeats the table for your dates.

Day by day
Day 1
Ho Chi Minh City to Cai Be's garden houses, then Vinh Long
Sitting in the carved main room of a garden house built around 1838
08:00 pick-up. The drive to Cai Be, about 108 km, takes two to two and a half hours by expressway, with one toilet stop. You arrive at Dong Hoa Hiep, a village of old houses that received national relic status in 2017. About ten of its houses were built before 1945.
Among them is the house of Mr Kiet, built around 1838 entirely of wood, with carved trusses, pillars and partitions. Visiting means stepping over raised thresholds and walking on smooth tiled floors; your guide walks beside anyone who wants an arm. We visit one or two houses, not five, and sit for a while in each: these rooms were designed to stay cool, and they still do.
Lunch is at a garden house in the village, followed by about ninety minutes of rest. Around 15:00 the car takes you about 35 km across the Tien River to Vinh Long, forty minutes to an hour, and you check in to the hotel by about 16:00. The evening is free; your guide suggests a riverside restaurant within a short walk or drive.
Day 2
An Binh islet's orchards, and back to the city
A slow morning on An Binh in fruit season
Breakfast at the hotel, then at 08:30 a three-kilometre drive to the An Binh crossing. The islet lies between the Tien and Co Chien rivers, more than 60 square kilometres of orchards and lanes facing Vinh Long. You cross by boat: one step down at the landing, a short ride, one step up on the other side.
On the islet we visit one orchard in the morning. Which one depends on the month and on who is walking: some orchards have a monkey bridge over a ditch as a photo stop; it is never required, and we check the way round before your trip. From July into August the trees are at their fullest.
Lunch at a garden restaurant on the islet, then a rest in the shade. About 13:30 you cross back. If anyone has the energy, we stop for half an hour at Van Thanh Mieu, a Confucian temple built in the 1860s on the Long Ho river. The drive back to Ho Chi Minh City, about 136 km, takes two and a half to three hours; you arrive in the late afternoon.
If someone in your party needs a ground-floor room or a lift, choose that option when you book and we confirm it with the hotel in writing. The pricing page explains how hotel level changes the quote; how to book covers holds and payment. The Cai Be and An Binh page describes the area.

Who this trip is NOT for
- Travellers who want to stay with a family on the islet. We sleep in a hotel; a homestay specialist will serve you better.
- Anyone set on the Cai Be floating market. It still exists but has weakened sharply, and we no longer build a morning around it.
- Visitors in October and November who cannot accept wet feet. Riverside streets in Vinh Long can flood at the highest tides of the flood season, usually for a few hours in the morning and evening.
- People who need a fully step-free route. The old houses have raised thresholds by design.
- Those with only one day. The Ben Tre day is the one-day alternative.

Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
Why not stay in a homestay on An Binh?
Many travellers enjoy it, and An Binh has many family homestays. Our trips are for people who prefer a hotel room with its own bathroom and, sometimes, a lift. If a homestay is what you want, this is not the right trip for you.
Can my father, who uses a cane, visit the old houses?
Usually yes, with an arm at the thresholds and a chair when he wants one. Tell us in the form and we will describe each house's entrance before you book.
Is there a lift at the hotel?
It depends on the hotel available on your date. When you choose the ground-floor-or-lift option, we only confirm a hotel that meets it, and the quote says which applies.
Can we see the Cai Be floating market on the way?
We can look from the riverbank, but the market is much smaller than it was. We would rather spend that hour in the garden houses, and we say so on the quote.
