Ninh Kieu riverfront in Can Tho in the evening, with lights on the water and the pedestrian bridge

Destinations · Can Tho

Can Tho, slowly

The river city on the Hau, with a riverfront made for evening walks, a 19th-century house that became a film set, and a floating market that survives at a fraction of its old size. Worth a night; better with two.

What Can Tho really is

Can Tho is a working city, larger and busier than the other places our trips go, and since 2025 its boundaries also take in the former Soc Trang and Hau Giang provinces. Visitors spend their time in a small part of it: the Ninh Kieu riverfront in the centre, where a pedestrian bridge built in 2016 lights up at night and a night market opens after about 16:00, and the river itself.

The floating market at Cai Rang, about 6 km from the centre, is the reason most people come. Its culture was recognised as national intangible heritage in 2016, and it is still the main surviving floating market of the delta. It is also much reduced. Road building and new embankments have squeezed its trading space; traders have switched to trucks; the pandemic sped that up; and a growing share of the boats at Cai Rang now carry visitors rather than goods. Published counts of trading boats disagree, so we do not quote one. Expect a market, not a flotilla.

Phong Dien, about 17 km by road from the centre, had a smaller market of rowed boats; it is quieter still, and worth going only if you understand that it may be very thin on the day.

Binh Thuy ancient house

The other visit we recommend is the Binh Thuy ancient house, about 8 km from the centre, built in 1870 by the Duong family and still privately owned. Its facade mixes French and Vietnamese styles; inside are carved wooden rooms and family altars. It was used as a set for the 1992 film The Lover. It became a national relic in 2009.

Published in October 2023, the hours were 08:00–12:00 and 14:00–18:00 and the adult entry VND 15,000; check locally before you go. We go in the late afternoon, after the midday rest, when the light is softer and the heat has eased.

How long to stay

One night is the minimum that makes the drive worthwhile: about three hours each way is a lot for a single day, and the market needs a morning. Two nights give you a day with no long drive at all, which is the version we suggest for young children and older travellers. A night in Vinh Long on the way out, combined with Cai Be and An Binh, splits the drive into shorter pieces.

When to go

JFMAMJJASONDComfortRiver mornings

Rainy season May to November, dry December to April; September is the wettest month. In October and November peak tides can flood riverside streets for a few hours.

The national tourism authority suggests December to April as the time for boat trips and markets, and that matches the climate data: in December the mean daily maximum is about 30 °C and rain is rare; by April it is close to 34 °C. The rains run from May to November. Mornings on the water stay pleasant most of the year, but in September, the wettest month, and in the flood-season tides of October and November, plans need slack. In 2025 the authorities asked residents to limit travel at high tide, 05:00–08:00 and 16:00–19:00, during the peaks.

How to get there

By road from Ho Chi Minh City the expressways now run all the way: Ho Chi Minh City–Trung Luong (62 km), Trung Luong–My Thuan (51.5 km), the My Thuan 2 bridge and My Thuan–Can Tho (23 km, opened December 2023). By car it is about three to three and a half hours with traffic.

Public buses leave around the clock from Ho Chi Minh City and take about four hours; operators include sleeper and limousine vans. They do not carry child seats. Can Tho's airport, about 9 km from the centre, has domestic flights only, and routes change, so check the airline before planning around it. Taxis and Grab are easy to find in the city.

Where to sleep

Central Ninh Kieu has the most choice and puts you within walking distance of the riverfront and the boat wharf. Published averages there were about VND 500,000–800,000 a night in 2023. Some properties our travellers ask about:

  • Nam Bo Boutique Hotel, an all-suite hotel of seven suites on the Ninh Kieu pier.
  • Victoria Can Tho Resort, a garden resort on the Hau River.
  • Muong Thanh Luxury Can Tho, a 27-floor hotel on Cai Khe, opened in 2015.
  • The island resort on Con Au that opened in 2018 as Azerai Can Tho is no longer an Azerai; it reopened as Legacy Mekong, Can Tho, Autograph Collection (Marriott announcement, 1 December 2025). It is reached by a five-minute boat from a mainland pavilion, which means a boarding each way.

We name the hotel on your quote. For older travellers we confirm a lift or a ground-floor room in writing.

When to skip it

  • If you only have one day from Ho Chi Minh City. Six or seven hours in a car for a short afternoon is not a gentle day.
  • If the floating market is the only reason, and you expect it to look like old photographs.
  • If anyone in the party is unhappy on boats. The city alone is pleasant, but the river is the point.
  • In the flood-season peak tides, if water on the streets would be a problem for your party.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Is the Cai Rang floating market still worth it?

Yes, with the right expectation. It is the main market still trading on the water, but much smaller than at its peak and partly touristic. Go early if you can; activity thins after about 08:00.

What time does the market start?

Published guides put the busiest period at about 06:00 to 07:30, with activity dropping after 08:00 to 08:30. From the city wharf the boat takes 30 to 40 minutes.

How far is Can Tho from Ho Chi Minh City?

About 171 km by road, three to three and a half hours by car, about four by public bus.

Is Can Tho suitable for older travellers?

Yes, with a hotel that has a lift and a covered boat with seats. The wharf steps are the hardest part; the guide and crew help on and off.
