Who this day is for

This is the trip we suggest when a family has one free day in Ho Chi Minh City and wants to see the delta without spending it in vehicles. It suits couples who would rather sit an hour in a garden than tick off four more stops, parents with children from about two upwards, and grandparents who walk comfortably for ten minutes at a time on flat ground.

The area either side of the Rach Mieu bridges is one of the most visited corners of the delta, and parts of it are set up for visitors: honey tasting, traditional music performed for groups, fruit platters. We do not pretend otherwise. We use it because it is the nearest water-coconut country to the city and because the bridges have taken away the ferry that used to break the day in two. Within that busy area we choose a workshop, an orchard and a lunch house where a small party is not swept along with a coach group, and we name them on your quote.

Ben Tre is coconut country in the plain sense: the former province has the largest coconut area in Vietnam, about 79,000 hectares, and coconut products from here are exported widely. What you see on this day is the small, domestic end of that: candy cooked in a family kitchen, palms over the canals, coconut shade in the orchards.

How to read this table

Lines that say road routing, or name a publisher, come from a published source, listed under the table with the date we checked it. Lines that say our plan describe how we design the day: they are promises about the plan, not measurements. The step height at a wharf, for example, changes with the tide, so we do not print a number for it. Your written quote repeats the table for your dates.

The road crossing matters more than it looks. The old Rach Mieu ferry stopped running on 20 August 2025, the day after the second Rach Mieu bridge opened to traffic, so the whole trip to the Ben Tre side is now by road. Thoi Son islet can also be reached by car, using a turn-off half-way across the original bridge.

Day by day

Day 1

Coconut workshop, sampan, orchard and a garden lunch

The sampan loop under water-coconut palms, at a pace set by the rower

08:00 — your guide and driver collect you from your hotel. The route leaves the city on the Ho Chi Minh City–Trung Luong expressway; we stop once, about half-way, for toilets and a stretch. By around 10:00 you reach the Tien River and the Rach Mieu bridges, with a first view of the river from the deck.

Morning on Thoi Son islet. The car takes the turn-off onto the islet. First stop is a family coconut-candy workshop, where the candy is cooked from coconut milk, malt, grated coconut flesh and sugar, then cut and wrapped by hand; children can usually help wrap. Then, if you want it, the sampan: you step down into a small rowed boat for a loop of 20 to 30 minutes along a narrow canal under water-coconut palms, life jackets on, and step back out at the same landing. Anyone who prefers not to go waits in the shade at the landing with a drink.

Midday on the Ben Tre side. A short drive across the river to a family orchard: a slow walk on flat paths between whatever is in fruit, with fruit cut for you at a table. Lunch follows at a garden house nearby, home-style dishes, rice, soup and fruit. Then the rest: about 75 minutes with hammocks, seats in the shade and a toilet close by. Children nap; adults often do too.

About 14:30 you leave for the city, arriving between 16:30 and 17:30 depending on traffic.

Times are a plan, not a timetable. If a child falls asleep in the car, we let them sleep and move the workshop to after lunch. The pricing page shows how the day is costed, and how to book sets out the steps from form to confirmation. For the area itself, read the Ben Tre destination page.

Who this day is NOT for

  • Travellers who want to see a floating market. There is none on this route; the Can Tho trip is the one for that.
  • Anyone hoping for a quiet, undiscovered corner. The Thoi Son and Ben Tre area is busy with day visitors, especially at weekends and on Vietnamese holidays.
  • Families who cannot manage two hours in a car each way. The market and garden kitchen day is about thirty minutes shorter on the road; nothing in the delta is much closer.
  • Wheelchair users who need a step-free day. The workshop and orchard can often be reached on the flat, but we cannot promise level ground everywhere; ask us and we will tell you what we know about each stop.
  • Travellers who want a long boat trip on the main river. This day has one short sampan loop by design.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Can we skip the boat completely?

Yes. Choose the road-only option, or decide on the day. The sampan loop is the only boat on this trip, and the rest of the day works without it.

How old does a child need to be for the sampan?

There is no fixed age, but the child must wear a life jacket that fits. We ask the boat operator in advance for a child size; if one cannot be confirmed, we leave the sampan out for that child and say so before you travel.

Is there a toilet on the boat?

No. Small rowed sampans have no toilet, which is one reason the loop is kept to 20 or 30 minutes. There are toilets at the landing, the workshop, the orchard and the lunch house.

What if it rains?

Rain in the delta usually comes as a heavy shower rather than a wet day. We carry umbrellas and ponchos, move the orchard walk around the shower, and drop the sampan if the rower advises it.
